SugarSync great idea, but horrible product

When I first started using sugarsync I loved it. I thought this is the file syncing sofware I was looking for. I backed up my data to the sugarsync servers, and synced my files to the rest of my computers. I loved Syncplicity at first, but they got rid of the mac client, and I have a macbook pro which I use everyday. Sugarsync had a windows, mac, and iphone client, and I loved that. However later did I find out how horrible Sugarsync was. Don’t let the website design, and look fool you.

I fried my hard drive on my macbook. Then I started a sync from sugarsync to my laptop on December 19, and even today, it hasn’t download all my files. The clients keeps disconnecting. I called support and they are just horrible no one knows what going on, but they say engineers are working on it, for more than two weeks. Users in the forums are pissed, no one is getting answers. I tried downloading the files through the web interface, but the files are corrupted even there. So basically at this point users are screwed. Only hope is that you synced the file to another computer. Some of my folders I just wanted backed up to the sugarsync servers, but now I’m bascially hoping that I can get the files recovered one day. The worst part is support is just horrible, they copy and pasted the following “the engineers are working on it”, which I’ve gotten more than 10 times.

My Recommendation

Stay away far from Sugarsync. Instead try Spider Oak, if you want to sync mac, windows, and linux files (no iphone client though at this point I don’t really care). If you only have Windows computers you may want to sync try Syncplicity also.

  1. Thanks for writing this; I’m always interested to hear customers’ experiences with these online backup services. Based on this, I may have to adjust our SugarSync Review

Sugarsync is a shame because they have a product that is 90% there. The management team has clearly decided that they do not want to focus on anything but cost-cutting. Charging telephone support fees for products that are “set and forget” style products is a classic symptom of a company who is struggling. I’ve lost files and burner countless hours. I’ve heard from their CEO and head support people, their CTO and more. But it was all talk. They never responded again, they never engaged, and I finally cancelled after being a customer for 2+ years. I was a beta customer.

I switch to dropbox and LOVE it. Have never had a single problem. The online help is great, the community is stronger and the support team actually responds. My guess is that Sugar will get sold for its IP and be another one of the companies that was a great idea but couldn’t execute.

WARNING DO NOT USE SUGARSYNC! SUGARSYNC lost all of my data and could not retrieve it from their own server. This company is a joke, they held my company hostage for 2 weeks trying to find my files that Sugarsync some how deleted from my desktop! Their horribly inept techs could not figure out where my data went so they just decided not to call me back. I finally got in touch with Debbie, Sr. Director, SugarSync Customer Care and she tried to make me feel stupid and that the whole thing was my fault. Sugarsync does not care about small businesses and their customer service is horrible.

Your story sounds very similar to mine. I started a sync from SugarSync to my netbook and it didn’t look like anything was happening. I clicked cancel and now the files that didn’t transfer are gone from my netbook and SugarSync. “Engineering” has been looking into it for 3 weeks now. I am sick that I finally backed up my photos and now they are gone.
